There is currently no defined or agreed minimum standard to assess the baseline competency of healthcare professionals providing medical support to athletes. In addition there are a wide variety of healthcare professionals involved in the multi-disciplinary team who may provide this support – making standardisation of a minimum competency qualification important.
It is for this reason the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK have produced the Team Care Diploma – which aims to set the minimum worldwide standard for the baseline competency assessment of the required skills and knowledge to provide healthcare in the team care environment.
Healthcare professionals working in the team care setting often have a wide and varied scope of practice. This can include but is not limited too; assessment, investigation and management of injury and illness, optimising preparation for sports performance, mitigation of injury and illness risk factors, athlete education on key topics such as sports nutrition, anti-doping, sports related concussion and more.
