Gareth Bate

Gareth Bate is a highly experienced Sports Therapist with over 17 years in professional sport. His career spans roles within Rugby Union, Golf, Triathlon, alongside more than a decade within the Scottish Rugby Union national team’s medical department. He has also represented Team Scotland at two Commonwealth Games.
Gareth holds a BSc in Sports Therapy and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, with a research focus on concussion management and coaches’ awareness of common signs and symptoms within women’s rugby union. His expertise lies in developing and delivering evidence-informed recovery and regeneration strategies tailored to the demands of elite sport.
Throughout his career, Gareth has built a reputation for his collaborative approach, and ability to thrive in multidisciplinary environments. He values teamwork, adaptability, and the consistent application of best practice to support both athlete welfare and performance.
Currently, Gareth is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy at University College Birmingham, where he integrates his extensive applied experience into teaching and mentoring the next generation of practitioners.
