There is now universal acceptance that the experience of pain is not restricted to a tissue issue where the biomedical model has been replaced with a patient-centred biopsychosocial approach. As a result, multi-model rehabilitation is used to help patients find resolve from their pain. This lecture discusses the beliefs, culture and attitudes surrounding the sensation of pain that protects us from further harm or injury. It will also discuss why manual therapy is still important and questions why some people need to feel pain to feel better.
